FIRENZE DALLA FINESTRA. "ROOM WITH A VIEW" BY E. M. FORSTER (ENGLISH MODE)
Posti che vai, Libri che trovi.
It's
a clear afternoon. It's only me and the city. In my hands, I have a
map that I open and re-open because I'm afraid to get lost. I haven't
a clear destination, I just want to walk and feel this warm sun air
on my face. I look around me and I see beauty everywhere: all things
are perfectly harmonious.
Florence is like a little open window to the past. Time is marked by the sound of the high bell-tower of Giotto. I decide to go up. Four-hundred steps but the view is unforgettable. I look at the roofs with them red bricks and the soft hills that turn into clouds. This is like a painting: the white marble of the Church of Santa Croce stands out between the dark-green of the trees and the ocra yellow of the houses. I'm climbing down the belltower, the stairs are so steep and I have to be very careful. In a little while, I'm down and the sun is setting.
I
walk, slowly, and I arrive to Ponte Vecchio. The river flows gently
and quietly, its colour are so similar to the Botticelli's
paitings that I saw in the Gallery of Uffizi.
I
think that Florence is a perfect combination of landscape and
architecture, man and nature.
Florence
is an amazing background for a love-story, especially its sweet
fields of
violets where the
protagonist Lucy Honeychurch receives her first kiss.
This british young lady plays the piano and when she plays, she feels like another person: free and full of passion. But in everyday life, she is completely different: she is closed, shy and quite. She wears a mask because she is afraid to break the conventional expectations for women of 20th century; she feels like a kite between earth and sky.
This book really surprised me because the first chapters were a little bit boring but when you begin to understand Lucy, you discover that she changes. She finally decides to ignore what other people think about her; she can grow up to become the real Lucy all because of George Emerson.
